You make a good point here. I noticed in 11.2(25a) there is no "area x
virtual-link authentication", at least on a 2500. It only has
authenication-key. On the routers I upgraded to 12.1 this option was
available.
In my example, R4 was running 12.1(10) and R5 has 11.2(25a). I'm sure
you've discovered the issue but I'm not sure how to resolve it cleanly. If
both routers are running 11.2(25a)--like when I tried this a few nights
ago--how would I explicitly turn on authentication on the virtual link?
In 12.1 it seems very simple given the new options but I wonder how I could
have fixed this had I not upgraded.
Thanks,
John

| But did you make sure that EVERY area 0 router had it? And if you used
the
| format below, you should have been OK. (I don't know that the router
| will Auto-Assume that you want Type 1 authentication if you just type in
| "authentication-key")

| area 1 virtual-link 1.1.1.1 authentication authentication-key cisco
