Testing of backup interface

Hi,

How can I test whether the backup interface works?
Does shutting down the primary interface able to test?
Or do I need to pull out the primary interface cable?

I have tested by shutting down the primary interface
in my home lab, the backup interface does not comes
up. I wonder whether I have done anything wrong.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
