PPP multilink with virtual-template

Hello all, I use Multilink PPP over two serial line.
I use this configuration
router a:
conf t
        int virtual-template 1
                en ppp
                ppp multilink
        int s 0
                en ppp
                ppp multilink
        int s 1
                en ppp
                ppp multilink
and router b with the same configuration.
But from cisco document cd, I found when using this method,
the command "multilink virtual-template 1" is need. But indeed,
without this command, multilink ppp work well.
Would anyone can be sure whether or not the command "multilink virtual-template
"
is needed ?
