Theoretically, the max distance with RS-232 is a function of the cable's capaci
tance. The budget is 2500 pF for a 20 Kbps signaling rate.

Back in ancient times, typical 'datacomm' cabling exhibited something like 50 p
F/ft, so this is where the standard '50 foot' answer comes from. Nowadays, I th
ink even half-decent cat5 cabling exhibits something less than 15 pF/ft, so aga
in theoretically, you should be able to get out past 165 feet or so @ 19.2 Kbps
. If you halve the speed to 9600 bps, the max distance should go up by somethin
g like a factor of 4 to 10!
