Personally, I could care less if he went to Johns Hopkins. I'll pick the
one who listens to me and actually gives a S___.

When was the last time that you asked one of your doctors where they went to
school?

Scott you make very valid points. But, we DON'T know if one Dr. or lawyer
is better than another. However, typically hospitals and law firms have the
ability to screen those people a lot better than most HR people at regular
companies. It's a lot easier to be interviewed by another Dr. or lawyer.
How many interviews have you had where the people conducting the interview
didn't have a clue about what you could do. I can honestly say that I've
never been interviewed by a CCIE. I know I've had very few interviews where
they could have been able to tell if I knew my stuff or not. Plus, there is
a lot to be said about where someone goes to college. Are you going to
prefer a Dr. that went to Johns Hopkins or South East Louisiana State? But,
it's not easy to discern one CCIE from another especially when it's an HR
person that only checks for buzzwords on a resume.
I agree that we should have to learn how to market ourselves personally.
The problem is you may be charging a lot more for your services than someone
else. If the HR people don't really understand what you do they may just go
with the cheaper guy since they can't truly understand the different
experiences.
