Subject: ISIS Summarization; Doyle Vol 1. pp 664 - 668
Interesting ISIS issue I am encountering...
I am configuring the ISIS Route Summarization example for Doyle Volume I pp
665 - 668. Initial config is as follows:
R1 - 2513 (Geneva)
Int E0 172.16.1.1/24
Int Lo0 172.16.2.1/24
Int Lo0 172.16.3.1/24
Int To0 172.16.4.2/24 > to Int To0 on R2 -2502 (Zurich)
Router ISIS (area 1)
net 01.0000.0000.306e.c209.00
R2 2502 (Zurich)
Int To0 172.16.4.1/24 > to int to0 on R1 Geneva
Int S0 172.16.8.2/24 > to Int S0 on R3 2520 (Madrid)
Router ISIS (area 1)
net 01.0000.0000.30b1.2ba9.00
R3 2520 (Madrid)
Int S0 172.16.8.1/24 > to Int S0 on R2 Zurich
Int s1 172.16.9.1/24 > to int s0 on R4 Bonn
Router ISIS
router isis (area 2)
net 02.0000.0010.7be8.7f53.00
is-type level-2-only
R4 2514 (Bonn)
Int e0 172.16.19.1/24 > to int fa0/0 Frankfurt
Int S0 172.16.9.2/24 > to int s1 on R3 Madrid
Router ISIS (area 3)
net 03.0000.0010.7b38.6414.00
R5 3640 (Frankfurt)
Int fa 0/0 172.16.19.2/24 > to int e0 on Bonn
Int fa 1/0 172.16.16.1/24
Int lo0 172.16.17.1/24
Int lo1 172.16.18.1/24
Router ISIS (area 3)
net 03.0000.00b0.64ef.8900.00
According to Doyle, I should add:
To Zurich:
summary-address 172.16.0.0 255.255.248.0
To Bonn:
summary-address 172.16.16.0 255.255.248.0
Expected result, according to Doyle:
"Any more-specific destination address that fall with the summarization
range are suppressed..."
Only L2 summarized routes should show on Madrid.
However, on my routing table on Madrid, I see all routes, including the /24
and the /21 summarized routes?
So, I add the appropriate summary routes to Geneva:
summary-address 172.16.0.0 255.255.248.0
And Frankfurt:
summary-address 172.16.16.0 255.255.248.0
Results:
On Madrid, I get the expected summarized /21 routes as expected originally!
:) No more /24 routes!
However
On Zurich, I still see my /24 subnet from my own area, and more perplexing,
the summarized 172.16.0.0/21 appears as a L2 route.
Same is true with the area 3 subnets on Bonn, area 3 /24 area there as L1,
but the summarized 172.16.16.0/21 appears as a L2 route.
Is this the expected result?
BTW: the IOS of the 2500s is c2500-js-l.120-9.bin and the 3640 is
c3640-ajs40-mz.120-3c (both Enterprise Plus).
Thanks in advance!
