My turn to chime in.

When my first friend/colleague passed the CCIE (number 3413), I had never
heard of it. Even after I first heard, I had no idea. He was the first in
this city, and 9th in this state. Few knew of the CCIE. There was no
formal study material, no books, etc. It was a different test, maybe
easier, but there was no easy access to material. Now, perhaps, it is a
tougher test, but we have resources out the wazoo. Anyone who is capable of
passing, has access to the tools to pass (assuming money available for
books, rack time, etc). As word of the CCIE became more widespread, MANY
MANY more of us began aiming for this goal. Supply and demand brought along
many books, etc. All the stuff most of us are now using to prepare. The
test is tough, no doubt. More and more people will continue to jump on this
bandwagon. As more people attempt, obviously, a greater number will pass.
Even with the booming economy slowed down, we know it will swing back
around, to some degree, and besides, this stuff is just plain fun. How cool
to be well paid to have this much fun. Anyway, loads of study resources,
access to racks (for a fee or for free), and tons more people trying, all
leads to more and more people passing, and thusly, the CCIE #'s growing to
10,000 soon. The only way to to stop this is to shut down the program.
They have done a great job of keeping it valuable, for 8 years now. Let's
wait and see, but I truly believe this 1 day exam will be tougher, but more
and more people will be trying, so the number will keep climbing, but the
bar will be raised, and the industry will recognize this.

I know this is all mostly obvious, but I feel this is the reality of the
CCIE, now, and soon.
