I think my email was misinterpreted by many - I wasn't saying that the CCIE
is valueless, but that its meaning is changing, ala MCSE or CNE.

If you recall, in the early days, having your CNE (or MCSE or CCIE) meant
you were a guru in your field. End of story - that's all that needed to be
said. That's no longer so - now, with all of the specialized prep courses
(and lists like this) the certification means you have a good THEORETICAL
background. But it says very little about your actual ability in the field.

I still think the CCIE is valuable, and yes I am still pursuing it (I had to
drop my date two weeks ago but have rescheduled for Sept). I see the CCIE
as a validation of my theoretical knowledge. (You see I had a non-technical
manager once that hired a 'router guru' He had installed hundreds of
routers. Well, it turns out that had racked and pasted configs into
hundreds of routers - he didn't know the difference between RIP and OSPF).
So in that sense the CCIE is still valuable.

In the near future I'm sure certifications like the CCIE will merge into
college curriculum (that's started already) - before long instead of a CCIE
you will graduate from college with a degree in network engineering and THEN
will start your career.

my 2c....
