I made an error. I di not have full connectivity, R3 was not seeing the
NSSA redistributed routes nor was it seeing routes advertised by r2. As
soon as I configured the virtual link with the authentication command, r3
saw all routes.

Subject: Authentication and virtual links revisited

I configured area 0 authentication on all my relevant routers (backbone and
virtual link) but I have a puzzler, I have full connectivity yet I do not
have the authentication appended to the end of the virtual link
configuration

r1---fr(area 0)----r3---(area 2)---r2----(Area 3)----r5

r3 & r2 have the virtual link configuration on them. I have area 0
authentication message-digest on r1, r3 and r2. All routers have full
reachability and no errors in the debug.

My question is why? Should I not have to configure the authentication (a
rhetorical question maybe as it seems to work fine without the additional
commands) along with the virtual link command? Eg area x virtual link
y.y.y.y authentication message-digest-key etc?
