More OSPF issues

I discovered recently that even if two interfaces have the same OSPF timers
(dead etc) and both routers have formed an adjacency, they may not fully
exchange all LSAs'

Case in point

r1----fr cloud ospf 0---r3---area 2---r2---area 3---r5

Both r3 and r2 have virtual links configured on them (to each other) using
area 2 as the transit area. The virtual links are up fine, r2 have
visibility to the backbone but not all inter area roues show up on r2. When
I checked the direct serial links between r3 and r2, one side is set for
broadcast and the other is set for point to point. Both routers were
adjacent and r2 was seeing the intra area routes advertised by r3. The
virtual links were up on both routers, but no inter area routes on r2. When
I configured both sides of the serial link for ip ospf point to point, all
inter area links appeared on r2 and on r5. Can anyone say why that was so?
