In order to conserve IP addresses, some ISPs use private addreses for
internal links. When u send a traceroute it send the packet with a
destination address of the end target which is the public address. each time
the TTL is decreased by 1. When the routers with private addresses get the
icmp packet, they return it to you with thier address as the source. packets
are routed using the destination address, which will always be a valid
public address. you would not be able to telnet to these private addresses
at the ISP, i.e. 172.20.6.11, but they are fully capable of returning a
packet back to you.

Subject: Routing

Hello Guys,

I found some traceroute that really bothers me and I don't know the
answer. Would you kindly explain it to me ?

If you check the entry 14-16 it is private address which is supposedly not
routeable... and it goes at entry 17 to end-host of this ISP/cable... which
is routeable address... Any idea ?

Thanks
