I had the same problem over a year ago. There is no way that you can do a
short cut. You simply need an AC power supply from Cisco. Nothing less and
nothing more.
I had suggestions to serially hook up truck batteries or buy it from Radio
shack.
Radio shack does not carry a DC converter of such caliber. Home made power
supplies are two risky for an equipment like 5500.
All these suggestions wasted three weeks of my time and at the end, I had to
bite the bullet and buy one for $1300.00.
Nobody wants the DC power supply. I got rid of it for $60.00
What I recommend:
1- bite the bullet and buy one. BTW, $1100.00 is a good price. Or,
2- recently I see 5500's with dual AC power supply on ebay. Buy one of those,
take one power supply out and sell the Cat with one power supply.
With couple of hundred dollars more or less, you should be able to get your
money back.
