BGP Practice via the Internet

Folks, over the past few months I have done several over-the-internet BGP
connectivity labs with various individuals. We've had some fun. Learned a
few things, and worked through most of the obvious problems. That said, I am
offering people who are reasonably close to their lab date the opportunity
to connect their lab pod to mine via the internet for purposes of BGP
studies. Those with whom I have done this have said it has been helpful in
finalizing their BGP preparation.

So I don't get overwhelmed with requests I am asking the following:

1) your lab date be no more than 6 weeks away

2) your practice lab have at least one direct internet connection

3) let's not waste a lot of time trying to work through proxy servers or
firewalls or NAT of any kind. In past experiments, we have found that some
ISP's don't like openness. We have surmised that in some cases BGP may be
filtered. We have also found that assuming all the BGP configurations and
neighbor statements are correct, it takes just a couple of minutes for the
connection to come up. Longer than that - something is wrong - either
configs or filtering by an ISP.

4) you be willing to spend about an hour on the phone or on a chat site
setting things up. I use the allnet site when I do these things, not being
fond of any of the instant messenger services. Actually, this could be done
entirely by e-mail, assuming typos don't creep into the messages. :->

5) You recognize that I have limited time to setup or assist. Once the
neighbor relationships form, that's it for me.

6) There is no access to my routers, telnet or otherwise. All you get from
me are the routes in my bgp table.

7) This favor will be available on weekends only, and only by advance
arrangement.

8) You recognize that I reserve the right to be the mean spirited republican
that I am and withdraw this offer at any time.

That said, anyone interested in attempting BGP connectivity between their
pod and mine, please contact me off line. I will make every effort to set
something up for you. I'll try to be prompt in my follow up, but if I am
overwhelmed with requests, I may not be able to respond quickly, or at all.

Best wishes to everyone in their studies.

Chuck

One IOS to forward them all.
One IOS to find them.
One IOS to summarize them all
And in the routing table bind them.
