Well,
I just returned from Halifax, and four out of five of us
successfully failed to make it to day 2. The one guy who made it to day 2
was an ISP/Dial track. Just some thoughts:
1) Know every possible command for any given routing
protocol. I was confronted with a scenario that I just couldn't figure out,
on my debrief got an idea of what I should have done. This killed me as I
had to modify something and the modification was present in several sections
-- lost points on those sections as I couldn't figure out how to do what
they were asking me to do.
2) READ VERY CAREFULLY!! In my rush, I misread a requirement
and again, lost significant points. Some requirements are worded vaguely and
are obtuse. Others are quite clear. If there are any questions, ask the
proctor -- Mike Reid at Halifax was helpful in keeping me from loosing more
points than I did.
3) Check your work. I felt so rushed, that I didn't
completely check everything -- and I paid for it by not being invited to day
2. Had I checked everything, I would have made it to day 2.
4) Time management. I spent too much time on several
scenarios, and didn't have as much time to do others that I knew how to do
well. It's not only a question of speed, it is also a question accuracy. A
mistyped mask on an interface cost me points!!!
I will say this much thought, it is a very humbling test. I knew
that even if I had made it to day 2 that I would not have finished. It is a
hard test, but not impossible. I now know what I need to do to secure a
number the second time around. In the mean time, I'll just keep hitting the
books and the routers.
