I haven't had the opportunity to investigate the possible
problems in Doyle's new Vol II book as mentioned in recent
threads. But I happily bought the book yesterday! After
flipping through a few pages to see how he tackles smaller
subjects like NTP, Logging, etc....I can already say that I am very
happy to own it. I think Jeff Doyle is the best writer
in the business of Cisco book writing. When you buy his books,
you can expect the following:
1. Concise, extremely clear writing that gives you access to the essence
of a particular technology in the shortest amount of reading.
2. He introduces a topic with the big picture context of a topic,
usually in the form of laying out its place in history. Then in a rapid but
thorough form he covers the topic to a degree of depth that allows
for all of the major aspects of the topic to sink in effectively.
3. His use of examples is superb, always illustrating well the topic being
discussed. Normally, I rarely bother to look at an author's
end of chapter exercises, but in Doyle's case, they are so well thought
out and are clearly designed to rehearse the important ideas of a chapter. I
actually type them out, questions/answers and use them as notes.
4. Excellent writing saves us all time. It makes it easier for us to learn
large bodies of knowledge in a short time. Jeff Doyle (and his editors!)
deserve a big pat on the back for producing such great books. If you know
Jeff, or know someone who knows him, please forward this email to him. I
love his books!!! And as may be guessed, there is
a special place in my heart for excellent writers, of which Doyle
is clearly one.
5. Bruce Caslow is good too...
6. Please don't flame me for this note. Its directed to people
studying for their CCIE who may not yet own a book by Doyle. Its
only my opinion on his books but I am sure I am not alone. Actually, if
you think there is a better writer than Doyle, I would be most
grateful to be enlightened.
