Steve,

You may have already figured this out, but you'll need to exclude your
R1 loopback from OSPF to be able to redistribute it in as an external
network (making R1 an ASBR).

Alternatively, you can place it into a different area and then use the
command you originally tried ('area range'), but for the different area
(making R1 an ABR).

redistribute connected (loopback comes in as external, pass this through
a
route-map to catch only the loopback network)
summary-address (to make it a /24)
