Roger,

My Teltone ISDN Demonstrator is hardcoded for basic-ni and SPIDs. I
deliberately configured my ISDN switch-type incorrectly and here's what
I got:

===%<===
R2#sh isdn stat
Global ISDN Switchtype = basic-5ess
ISDN BRI0 interface
        dsl 0, interface ISDN Switchtype = basic-5ess
    Layer 1 Status:
        ACTIVE
    Layer 2 Status:
        TEI = 87, Ces = 1, SAPI = 0, State = MULTIPLE_FRAME_ESTABLISHED
    Layer 3 Status:
        0 Active Layer 3 Call(s)
    Active dsl 0 CCBs = 0
    The Free Channel Mask: 0x80000003
    Total Allocated ISDN CCBs = 0
R2#ping 192.6.1.3

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 192.6.1.3, timeout is 2 seconds:

00:52:34: ISDN BR0: TX -> SETUP pd = 8 callref = 0x06
00:52:34: Bearer Capability i = 0x8890
00:52:34: Channel ID i = 0x83
00:52:34: Keypad Facility i = '8358662'
00:52:34: ISDN BR0: RX <- RELEASE_COMP pd = 8 callref = 0x86
00:52:34: Cause i = 0x82EF - Protocol error; unspecified.....
Success rate is 0 percent (0/5)
===%<===

I guess the "MULTIPLE_FRAME_ESTABLISHED" is somewhat of a red herring in
this situation. But notice I did get the "Protocol error; unspecified"
Q.931 message.

I then configured the correct ISDN switch-type (basic-ni) but left off
the SPIDs--here's what I got after clearing the interface:

===%<===
R2#sh isdn stat
Global ISDN Switchtype = basic-ni
ISDN BRI0 interface
        dsl 0, interface ISDN Switchtype = basic-ni
    Layer 1 Status:
        ACTIVE
    Layer 2 Status:
        TEI = 88, Ces = 1, SAPI = 0, State = MULTIPLE_FRAME_ESTABLISHED
    Layer 3 Status:
        0 Active Layer 3 Call(s)
    Active dsl 0 CCBs = 0
    The Free Channel Mask: 0x80000003
    Total Allocated ISDN CCBs = 0
R2#
R2#
R2#ping 192.6.1.3

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 192.6.1.3, timeout is 2 seconds:

00:57:59: ISDN BR0: TX -> SETUP pd = 8 callref = 0x07
00:57:59: Bearer Capability i = 0x8890
00:57:59: Channel ID i = 0x83
00:57:59: Keypad Facility i = '8358662'
00:57:59: ISDN BR0: RX <- RELEASE_COMP pd = 8 callref = 0x87
00:57:59: Cause i = 0x82EF - Protocol error; unspecified
00:57:59: ISDN BR0: Setup was rejected, cause = 6F.....
Success rate is 0 percent (0/5)
===%<===

Notice the "Setup was rejected, cause = 6F."

I then deliberately configured the SPIDs incorrectly and cleared the
interface again. I immediately got a console message complaining about
the SPIDs, but the call setup rejection cause remained the same.

Want to try changing switch-types for the heck of it? Here are the
hardwired SPIDs from my Teltone unit in case you want to try them:

Port #1
isdn spid1 0835866101 8358661
isdn spid2 0835866301 8358663

Port #2
isdn spid1 0835866201 8358662
isdn spid2 0835866401 8358664

Regards,

Mas Kato

Subject: Can't get ISDN to work:UPDATE2

I fixed the dialer map, but I believe this has nothing to do with
authentication. The ISDN simulator according to the LAB docs is set to
5ess. I have reset both routers and the switch but still receive the
same
error. I have also added a "debug isdn q921" output.
