Erick,

This is a very interesting issue, I did something like this a while ago and
this is what I found....

If for example R1 has eight equal cost paths to network X, and after
configuring all your routing protocols you reload R1, it will pick the six
routes that have the highest next hop addresses, but it gets very
interesting when you take a link down, you will see that one of the routes
in the EIGRP topology table showed up instead of the one that was taken off
(which is normal), but when you bring the downed link up you will notice
that the route that was added did not get replaced by the original route
which has a HIGHER next hop address.

So if you look at the topology table, you will notice that there is a next
hop address that is higher than one you have in the routing table, I tried
multiple clear ip route * but no luck, the only way to get this to work
properly again is to reload the router... it could be an IOS bug, I will
check..test was done on 12.1(6).

Thanks

Subject: More then 6 equal cost paths -- EIGRP, etc

Hi there,

I have a interesting issue which came up at the office
and we've scoured CCO, EIGRP white papers, etc but
haven't been able to find a answer yet so thought
perhaps someone on this list might have some input.

If a router has more then 6 equal cost paths to a
destination (say 8) how does IOS decide which routes
to use? I'm thinking it may use the 6 highest next
hops or something similar. Maybe not.

Erick
