James,

This behavior appears to be by design... Perhaps it was point of your
exercise--were you instructed to manually manipulate bandwidth
statements, costs, etc.? Maybe it was to illustrate the issues you could
face when you have multiple exit points from an area that aren't
topologically co-located and/or have different speeds and feeds into the
backbone...

Path-type
There are four possible types of paths used to route traffic to the
destination, listed here in order of preference: intra-area, inter-area,
type 1 external or type 2 external.

Also, sec. 16.2, pp. 122:

---%<---

(3) If the collection of destinations described by the summary link
falls into one of the router's configured area address ranges (see
Section 3.5) and the particular area address range is active, the
summary link should be ignored. Active means that there are one or more
reachable (by intra-area paths networks contained in the area range. In
this case, all addresses in the area range are assumed to be either
reachable via intra-area paths, or else to be unreachable by any other
means.

Subject: OSPF Cost VS Metric Type

Hello Group,

I have a situation where OSPF seems to prefer O routes (ie Intra-area)
before "O IA" routes. It does this even though the internal route has a
high cost (6000) and the IA route has a low(er) cost (810).

I have buit the same lab on IOS 11.2 and 12.0(8), and have the same
effect.

Is this normal ? or have I mis-interpreted the symptoms ?

James
