Alan:
Actually C2K does have a layer 3 /2 protocol analyzer built into it.
It has the same level of detail as Network Associates Sniffer Pro v4.0. (I
use both). The only catch on the Ciscoworks 2k side is you have to purchase
a probe in order to get the same statistics as sniffer pro. I work at a
educational facility so we get the government discount, however the sniffer
pro software is a little bit more expensive then the C2K product. Both are
good products however. Ciscoworks has a better gui interface and allows you
to do allot more then just layer 3/2 packet analysis. I like sniffer pro
cause its easy to just plugin and capture. If you just want to do layer 3/2
analysis, then definately sniffer pro is the way to go. However you have to
buy the distributed system module and if you have multiple wan circuits then
you need to move your distributed system to each circuit you want to
monitor, or buy multiple distributed systems, which can get very costly...
Software for thought
have a good one -C
