The backup command knows the difference between administratively down and
down due to failure. In order to get it to activated you have to disconnect
the cable.

Subject: ISDN Backup Interface
Hi all
I am playing with backup interfaces and can't get it to work. Below is the
configs, debugs and show that I have tried. What I don't understand is why
the
BRI goes to deactivated instead of active. Any ideas ?
Config R3 :
interface Serial1
backup delay 3 3
backup interface BRI0
backup load 50 25
ip address 10.0.3.2 255.255.255.0
no ip directed-broadcast
shutdown
clockrate 250000
interface BRI0
ip address 10.0.2.2 255.255.255.0
no ip directed-broadcast
encapsulation ppp
dialer map ip 10.0.2.1 name R2 broadcast 95717183
dialer-group 1
isdn switch-type basic-net3
isdn answer2 123
ppp callback request
ppp authentication chap
When I do show backup with S1 active:
R3#sh backup
Primary Interface Secondary Interface Status
----------------- ------------------- ------
Serial1 BRI0 normal operation
Now I disable S1 and get the following from "debug backup" :
R3(config)#int s1
R3(config-if)#shut
R3(config-if)#
01:14:24: BACKUP(Serial1): event = interface shutdown
01:14:24: BACKUP(Serial1): secondary interface (BRI0) moved to standby
01:14:24: BACKUP(Serial1): changed state to "disabled"
01:14:26: %LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface Serial1, changed state to
administratively
down
01:14:27: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Serial1, changed
state
to down
and "show backup" :
Primary Interface Secondary Interface Status
----------------- ------------------- ------
Serial1 BRI0 disabled
Thanks in advance
Rudi
