Hello group,

Well yesterday I came away with CCIE #7190 on my second attempt in San Jose.
I didn't find the material at all difficult because I had prepared for 7
months prior. I failed the first time because of poor strategy, plain and
simple. Don't try to configure each router individually with all
components, thats an excellent way to fail and I did. On my second attempt
I configured all layer 1/2 stuff as well as basic IGP. Then I did any IGP
tricks, filtering or redistribution or whatever. Finally, I moved to the
EGP and that was that. Finished day 1 with 3 hours to spare, so I just
checked the network for the next 3 hours becoming as familiar as possible
with everything. I was pretty confident I would make it to day 2.

2 out of 6 people went on to day 2. I walk in with the binder on my desk
and went straight to work and finished it all in an hour, except for one
part that I still couldn't get. Fought with it for 2 hours but had to give
up and lose the 2 points, oh well.

Had lunch for an hour walked in and went to troubleshooting. Found 25
faults in 2 hours and came away with my number, the other guy did too. He
was 7189 and I was 7190.

The San Jose proctors are great. Jose and Kathy. They are heads and tails
better then the weekend proctors I had on my first attempt. Very clear very
detailed and very good about answering questions. If you take the test on
the weekend you are pretty much left on your own to fend for yourself

The material I used was the same as everyone else. Doyle, Halibi, Caslow.
I used the CCbootcamp labs. They were good but I think they need to be
updated. I disagreed a lot with how they came to some of their answers, it
was outdated. Still worth the 600 dollars in my opinion and Marc is really
great. I used their racks too for 5 days, they were really good to get
hands on for ISDN, ATM and Token Ring.

I had 28 days between attempts, I was lucky in that Christine got me in
right away. I knew I didn't need to study anymore I just needed a better
strategy. So took 2 weeks off due to a family issue and was getting ready
to just wait 7 months, then I got in right away. Hooray!!!

Finally the list was really great. There is a lot of OT things that fly
around here, but thats ok, i just delete it if it is uninteresting Some of
the OT stuff is very good. I also filtered all of the mails in exchange.
by subject line. Worked pretty good for the most part. (i.e IPX, bootcamp,
bgp, DLSW, etc) That is probably why I didn't contribute more. I didn't
really approach the messages in the order they came, it was more by subject
matter. I was usually around 3-4 weeks behind in the list due to this
strategy, but it worked for me.

It was great learning a lot from the people on this list. Inparticular
Chuck L, Julie Ann, Tracy B. There are tons more but you three really stick
out for me, Thank you. I will try to contribute more now that I am not in
study mode.

Thanks again
