Redistributing OSPF into RIPv2

Group,

When redistributing OSPF into RIPv2, I noticed that by default metric is set
to 16 (unreachable).
02:10:36: RIP: sending v2 update to 224.0.0.9 via Serial1 (10.21.1.1)
02:10:36: 10.3.0.0/16 -> 0.0.0.0, metric 16, tag 0
02:10:36: 10.6.0.0/16 -> 0.0.0.0, metric 16, tag 0
02:10:36: 10.33.0.0/17 -> 0.0.0.0, metric 16, tag 0
02:10:36: 10.100.0.0/16 -> 0.0.0.0, metric 16, tag 0

Now when I use RIPv1, redistribution occurs no problem and the metrics
reflect actual hop count. Of course, I can manipulate this with:
'redistribute rip metric 2' under 'router ospf' but I'd like to know whether
this is expected behavior. Has anyone else experienced this? I've searched
Doyle and CCO without success.

Thanks in advance,
