I have found proxy arp useful when I have had multiple routers on the same
segment, and not wanted to point the hosts on that segment to a specific
default gateway or not use an HSRP type protocol.
With Windows Clients, if I entered the default classful mask for the
network (255.0.0.0 classA, 255.255.0.0 classB, 255.255.255.0 classC) and
left the the default-gateway blank, the hosts on that segment then arped
out before starting their sessions. Both my Cisco and Marconi ATM switches
with routers proxy by default and answered up to these arp requests.
Some installations I have found turn off this default to prevent proxy-arp
for to force their users to use a particular default-gateway.
