I can assure from real experience and also OSPF DESIGN GUIDE (Sam Halabi)
In it's paragraph "14.1 E1 vs. E2 external routes" says:
1.- "A type 1 route is always preferred over a type 2 route for the same
destination."
THIS IS : referring to the selection of routes for forwarding packets
and in the next paragraph:
2.- "Type 2 routes are preferred over type 1 routes in case two same
cost routes exist to the destination."
THIS IS: referring to route redistribution
And last I think I can remember that when there are two E2 LSAs for the
same external network with the same
cost (and doen't exist an E1 LSA for that network), it will use the
route coming from the closer ASBR as Brian says, even when this seems to
contradice the default behaviour of ospf that says that it uses up to
four equal cost routes to the same destination, but in many aspects
external Routes are treated different by OSPF.
