RE: ISIS - weird problem with ethernet switch.

Under the interfaces, I am assuming that you have entered the command isis
circuit-type level-1-2 it doesn't show in the config, even after entered.
Just checking.

Interesting - I saw the level one and level two packets on both debug
traces. When I see traces like this on frame relay links I attribute it to
failure to see the other side - i.e. isis packets are going out both
ethernets, but none are coming in.

You say a crossover from router to router works fine. So that would
eliminate the configuration as a factor.

Now we come back to the switch. Same ports, same cables, bgp, eigrp, rip,
ping works fine, you say. But.....

On your isis debugs, the connections on your frame side don't happen because
of area mismatches. When you ran the other routing protocols, were the
routes visible through ethernet, or through your frame links? Has this
problem become apparent only because isis is not working properly on any
interface?

That would leads back to a problem with the switch configuration or ports.

Subject: RE: ISIS - weird problem with ethernet switch.

Here are the configs and debugs for my routers R5 and R6 connected via
Ethernet. I'm still confused as to why it works when I go through a X-over
ethernet cable instead of 2912 switch. As you can see in the configs below,
Frame Relay, HDLC and X.25 seem OK.

Anyway, thanks for looking at this.

Subject: ISIS - weird problem with ethernet switch.

I am having an odd problem getting ISIS to run successfully between two
2501
(IOS 12.0(13)) routers connected via an Ethernet segment through a
2912xl
switch. The odd thing is that other traffic (ping, RIP, OSPF, BGP) has
been
working fine between these two routers via the 2912, and on the same
exact
VLAN. If I connect the two routers together via a X-over ethernet
cable,
ISIS routing updates work and all is well.

As far as I can tell, my cabling is OK because other traffic works fine.
Just to be sure, I did try other known good cables with no success.
Likewise, I have forced the ports on the 2912 to 10M/half. I feel I am
running into some issue with broadcast or multicast packets not being
forwarded by the 2912xl switch.

Have any of you heard of an issue like this before? I searched the
archives
and the closest thing I came across was an MTU setting issue when using
ISIS
over Token Ring. I verified that my clns mtu setting is 1497 as
dictated by
the physical interface.

Thanks for your help,
Ben Bolles
