You could wri your setting s to memory and then don't allow minicom to do an
AT&F with the init or just add ats0=1 to the init line. I think you have
figured this so I'll tel you how you do it in minicom: su to root, start
minicom with the -s flag "minicom -s" then select modem and dialing, hit A to
change the init string. Done.
