If you have a single point of redistribution, metric manipulation will be
pointless. If there's only one way to get to a network (via that single
redistribution point) then why worry about setting a metric, unless you have
to like when redistributing into a distance-vector protocol like RIP where
your metric must be less than 16.

If you have multiple points of redistribution, you may want to malipulate
metrics of particular routes to influence traffic back to those
destinaltions through a particular router (redistribution point).

I'm not sure if you are, but don't confuse metric with administrative
distance. Keep in mind that a router will choose a path to a destination
based on:

1. longest prefix match
2. lowest admin distance
3. lowest metric

I hope that helps.

Subject: redistribution...

I'm having a little trouble determining how to pick a metric when
redistributing. Can someone please shed some light.

Steve
