Would a 4003 suffice in place of the 5002 or 2901??

They are exactly the same, It is like a 5002 only fixed config ( not
modular) and it has a sup1 and a 12 port line module. I run 4.5.9 at home on
mine. The only drawback is that it heats up my room like crazy.

They are not the same OS. The commands are quite different.
But the 2900 can do most of what you need I think. You can setup
VLANs, trunking, and VTP. And if you need to get experience with
the 5000 rent some time.
