While they are used interchangeable throughout the internetworking
community, it does not mean that it is proper to do so :) I think doyle's
book has a reference to the topic, I'll look it up when I get home. But if
you and your wife are carrying 50 lbs of apples each, that'd be load
balancing. If you decided to be a gentleman and let her carry 90 lbs, it
would be unequal cost load sharing.

Ah ah Mike, you don't escape so easily.... ;->

Are you using the approach that load sharing = sending packets out a number
of interfaces, or a number of routers ( "paths" ) in any ratio, as opposed
to "load balancing" = sending an equal number of packets out each available
path / interface / router?

Or visa versa?

If I have 100 lbs. of apples to carry to the local farmer's market, and I
give 10 lbs. to my wife to carry, is that load balancing or load sharing?

In general, my experience is that these terms are used interchangeably by a
lot of folks. One must delve a bit deeper to determine what the real
question is and what the real problem to be solved is, as opposed to the
speaker's perception of these things.

Load balancing is a subset of load sharing, where the shares of the load are
equal.
