The key here is "recruiter". Once a recruiter is involved it's very
difficult to know what really going on. Did you buddy get a contract or any
thing signed when the offer was made?
I had a recruiter in try to pull something like this, he told me I was hired
and gave me a start date but because I smelt a rat I called the manager that
interviewed me at the company and he said it wasn't the case. The recruiter
had caused a lot of trouble for company x and they no longer wanted to use
that recruiter. I was still hired by the company but through a different
recruiter.
The orginal recruiter didn't tell me this, he just kept pushing the start
date back! (hoping he could smooth over the issue I guess). The recruiter
finnaly called me to tell me that the contract hadn't gone through due to
budget issues at company x after I'd been working @ company x for 2 weeks!
