It has been my approach to draw out the physical and basic IP layout in the
beginning and then add/modify it as I went along. As for writing out the
configs, i think it is waste of time outside of putting standard config for
all the routers (ie passwords, no ip domain-lookup etc). You do however need
to arrive at a very detailed diagram in process, it will save you a
tremendous amount of time.
