Bill,
   You're stuck with the version of IOS you get on the router. Naturally,
if you had two of the same type of router and different versions of code
you could set up one to be a tftp-server and copy the image
over. But... do you really want to take that chance? What happens if
something goes wrong during the updrade and the router doesn't come back
up? You won't be given any time back for the lab if there are problems.

Bugs are always a possiblility, particularly if it's a new lab. Bring it
to the attention of the proctor. One of the keys to being a CCIE is
knowing what is expected behavior and what isn't. I agree everything
should be bug free but with the number of different ways things can be
configured and combinations of features, etc, the proctors can't ensure
you won't run into problems. But they will take action to prevent similar
problems again.
