HSRP is transparent to end systems, IRDP requires end system
configuration/support to work and not all IP stacks support listening to
IRDP broadcasts.
I've used it once in 8 years, and then replaced it with HSRP when it became
available, as cutover is quicker and less configuration is required.
Excellent idea for a lab though, could you configure a router system to use
an HSRP address as it's next hop/default etc, see the differnece when using
IRDP etc.
