I'm of the opinion that migration from one set of protocols
to another can be a painful thing. But sometimes the benefits
make it quite desirable. :-)
I wonder if it would be desirable for the members of this
list to make the list function less like a hub (all traffic seen
by all) and more like a route update...less broadcast oriented,
more point-to-point. (insert better analogy here) :-)
Messages containing a question would have "Question:how to do X" in
the subject line. Replies would be directed to the person
with the question (and not the list). That person would then
summarize the responses and post another message to the list
with the subject line, "Summary: how to do X." The cost for
posting to the list woudl be the effort required to summarize
the answers. The result would be a better mailing list protocol.
List members could filter their mail just on summaries.
This wouldnt have to be a strict rule to follow...exceptions
to rules always seem to pop up.
In any case, it can be a cultural question for sure. I offer it
as a suggestion. Some of the best mailing lists I've ever been
on were operated this way....very efficient, very productive lists.
