RE: Pitfalls

My employer actively and willfully hindered my studies by giving me a big
stack of projects as my lab date was aproaching. I paid for my CCIE study
program out of my own pocket (and I mean everything, including books), with
no fancy classes, no mock labs, and I had to use my vacation time to cram
for the lab and to take the examiniation.

The one thing I had in my favor was that I did not have to build my own
practice rack. There is a local ISP who had some extra gear lying around
and in return for using the equipment I constructed and mainain a practice
lab/testbed for their engineers. Still had pay for a POTS simulator and
cabling, and put up with routers getting removed all the time, but it worked
out pretty well. I was also able to worm some rack time out of the local
cisco sales office and I rented one of Marc's racks for a day.

Anyway I managed to make it the first time, without classroom training, lots
of money, or employer support. Sweat equity, an understanding wife, and
desire can compensate for lack of resources.

I hope I'm not coming off as a braggert. I am just trying to point out that
you don't need to spend 25 grand and go to a bunch of classes and have
corporate sponsorship to do this thing (although those things would be
nice). Belive in yourself and make the most of what you have!

BTW, you can do most all of those CCbootcamp labs with fewer routers than
what is in the diagrams. Figure out what is important and what can be
removed and redesign the lab to fit what you have. Be creative. You can use
Dot1q or ISL if you don't have enough physical interfaces for example.

Adapt, overcome, succeed.

Some very good points Tracy.
Ideally, the backing of one's employer to allow time to study and pay for
the necessary hands on training and/or help in providing equipment to
practice is vital. Without this and the money to pay for a home lab or time
in virtual labs I think you are probably up against it!
