You don't want noise, boot messages, etc. from the routers to be
misinterpreted as commands by the comm server. The "no exec" is on the
async lines connected to the lab routers to prevent input from those
lines from being executed as commands.

Exactly, but no adapter. The comm server is essentially a 2501 with eight
or 16 extra "aux" ports which become the lines. These are a SCSI-style
multi-pin connector for each eight lines that fans out to RJ-45 style
8-pin modular jacks, so just a flat rollover cable between each and the
corresponding router console port.

The comm server's console is connected to the serial interface on the
PC at your workstation, perhaps through an arrangement that allows the
proctor to monitor or take over the connection.

It's a good idea to practice the telnet escape sequences, to hop from
router to router as you'll likely only have one window to work with.

Also, to send a break to a router via the comm server, it's Ctrl-shift-6
followed by "b". Useful for password recovery.
