Devin, when I first read your question last night I was ready to shoot back
a quick reply saying, the class is great, spend the money ect ect.... I
almost hit the send button, but did not. I thought about it last night. I
had this some conversation with a co-worker the other day, and told them to
take the class, but then latter was not sure if that was the right thing to
do. In you question you mention the cost. Yes the cost is 3600. That gets
you in the class, and another copy of the book. Depending on location of the
class your costs are going to be different. I took the class in Aug, in NY
City. The hotel was on average for the class 200.00 a night, there is
another 1000. You also have to eat something, and get to the location. Lets
just for fun say the class, all said and done is going to cost 4600-5000.
That may be high but its the number I'll use. The class was great. Bruce
really does do a good job on hitting the high points, and makes you look at
things in a different way. Also the members of the class were also great. We
had a few people who knew BGP inside and out. They could explain things to
the rest of us, in a way that made sense. That was the same for a number of
the topics. The down side of the class is that it is only a week, and by
Friday, your brain will explode. If you do take the class, take real good
notes, you will remember only a few things if you don't, there is just to
much material to remember, in a short time. The other down side is that the
class, and book needs to be updated. The newer lab test, go into allot of
areas that are not covered in the book. Bruce does have allot of hand out to
try and make up for those areas. If they were giving the lab test they did a
year ago you would be in great shape, but they are not. Do to the fact you
mentioned the money, I'm going to assume that you may doing this on your
own, or don't have allot of resources at work. In that case what I would do
is skip the class, spend the money on a few routers, and buy the boot-camp
labs. You should be able to get a few routers, and the labs for less then
the 4600-5000 for the class. You also should have some money left over to
rent rack time. Even if you just take the class, you are going to need
something to practice on after the class. If you don't, you have wasted the
money. Most of the topics covered in the class, are also in the boot-camp
labs. Some of the examples are all most the same. If I'm wrong and money is
not a problem, then do both.
My 2 Cents
Howard

Subject: ECP1 vs book " BRS by Caslow"
Hello all..
I need advise from fellow list members regd the famous ECP1 course vs the
book "Bridges Routers and Switches" by Caslow. They seem to have same
course content. I have gone through that book 2-3 times and understand it
reasonably well (except for Non-IP protocols). Is it still worth attending
ECP1 course?? It is $3600, which is quite expensive for me. Also, do they
cover topics like VOIP, VPN and multicast etc which are part of lab exam
but not covered in book??
Another suggestion which I got was, that instead of spending $3600, it is
better to buy 3 Routers and build my own lab (which I don't have right now)
and practice on them since I have alreday gone through the book.
What is your suggestion ???.
Thanks
Devin
