There is a white paper somewhere on CCO called "Path of a Packet".
It explains exactly what happens to a frame as it enters and exits a
Cisco router. It explains in detail all the diferent switch paths,
buffers used, etc. I read it once and really cool. I can't for the
life of me find it on the site now. Maybe someone on the list can has
the link.

Subject: Somebody must know the answer
3rd time to post....!!!
Can anybody tell me exactly what happens in terms of the IP stack on
the
Router, when you ping an Ethernet local interface and a Serial ptp
Interface.........i.e. the packet is generated by the Router to ping
its
own interface.........where exactly the packet goes........or software
instructions that are carried out..........
