Not allowed to reset the session , the link is a major internet link -
though when I do a sh ip bgp, I see the route has been learned again from
the same neighbor within the last few minutes. The distribute-list has been
in place for 4 days. It's not critical, but is there a way I can remove the
route from BGP without resetting the entire session?

They work. Post your config though. Did you reset the BGP peer after you
applied the dist-list ?
