RE: Loopback & OSPF

your rid will always be the loopback with the highest ip address, if you
have a loopback on the router. if you don't have a loopback then it will be
the highest ip address

scenario 1 no loopback

if you add a new ip address to an interface after starting ospf, which is
higher than all the others, nothing will change until you do a reload. after
a reload the rid will change to the highest ip address

scenario 2 with loopback

if you add a new ip address to an interface nothing will change before or
after a reload because you have a loopback. if you add a new loopback with a
higher address nothing will change until you do a reload. after the reload
the rid will be the new loopback address

remember this because if you have a virtual link it terminates on the rid so
changing the rid can cause problems

I hope you can understand that, it's not easy trying to explain over an
e-mail, the best thing to do is try in a lab

I understand that. What would you do if lab instructions specifies not to
use any loopback interfaces unless specified. What happens after reboot?
