RE: IPX SAP

Let me have a shot at this.

NetWare servers have a strict ratio of 60 seconds for SAP broadcasts. By
changing the Router's SAP interval on the ethernet segment you risk losing
service for remote services. SAP entries will be aged out of the NetWare
server's table (on the local segment) because it isn't getting the expected
60 second updates.

An analogy would be route flapping due to timer mismatch on RIP.

In the later versions of NetWare you can adjust this interval (I want to say
4.11 and later), or use NLSP on the server. The key here is that every
device on the network has to be on the same interval (that includes any
advertising printers or NT doing FPNW, anything that would broadcast its SAP
table or services.) The router is reminding you of that fact when you try
to adjust that value.

By default the amount of broadcast radiation is inconsequential on most LANS
from 60 second SAP broadcast. Each SAP packet can list 7 services. We're
not talking a lot of traffic here, so most Admins don't adjust this value.

Now, if you don't have any servers on the local segment there isn't a need
to broadcast the sap table. The server will still answer GNS broadcasts
with entries in its SAP table as usual.

Subject: IPX SAP

If am working on a scenario where I want to optimize sap traffic on an
ethernet. I thought the way to do this was to apply the ipx update internal
sap changes-only to the etherent interface, when I applied this command I
got the following warning;

% Warning: Changing the SAP interval on LANs is dangerous!

So my question is why do i get this warning and what efect does this command
have on client end stations receiving saps

Cheers
