Hi Sam,
     If you have access to Doyle's book have a look at page 202. It states
that if a router receives a packet with a certain destination address, it
has no way of knowing where the subnet bits start or end (or even if there
are subnet bits). The only recourse it has it to assume the mask configured
on one of it's interfaces is used consistently throughout the internetwork.
By using it's own mask it can then work out the subnet address of where the
packet is to be sent. If the network is not directly connected, then yes,
you are right, it will use the major network. Sorry if it's not really
clear but Doyle does do a good job of explaining it.

Question:

Does that mean you can have /28 on RIP and OSPF and still it would work? I
thought RIP would work with classful boundries only.
