Everyone is right, Cisco offers many different options for doing
load-balancing depending on what type of applications you are looking for.
* Local-Director 430 for appliance based load-balancing, using Layer4 (and
some Layer 7) and advanced balancing techniques.
* Cat6k IOS-SLB for Layer-4 aware Load-Balancing using the Supervisor/MSFC
for the intital decision, and the PFC for subsequent forwarding decisions.
* Cat6k ASLB for Layer-4 aware Load-Balancing using the Local Director for
the initial decision, while using the PFC for subsequent forwarding
decisions.
* Content Switch (via. the ArrowPoint aquisition) load-balancing
application - For advanced Layer-7 high-speed intelligence in hardware.
Determining which method to use, depends on what you are trying to achieve.
In most ecommerce applications (i.e. those using any form of purchasing or
shopping carts, where persistance and session state maintenance are highly
important) are more suited to Layer-7 aware load-balancing techniques
(cookie sticky, cookie insert, HTTP load-balancing, etc) and advanced
balancing techniques (such as server load, sessions, server-latency,
server-load, etc) such as those available on the content switch 11000 (or
the Local Director in certain applications).
Load-Balancing static content presents you with more options such as using
the Cat6k IOS-SLB for very high throughput, as the ability to load-balance
Layer-7 intelligence is of lesser importance. ASLB is more suited to
high-throughput FTP applications. If the the ability to load-balance based
on advanced metrics like server-load or ASP is important, then consider
using Content Switch (or possibly Local-Director).
Speak with your local SE for guidance on this area.
