You can compress the IOS on some routers who don't already use a compressed
version (indicated by the 'mz' in the filename).
This is not recommended by Cisco and your mileage may vary.
Just use a unix 'compress' on a regular image and tftp it to your router.
The router will recognize that it is a compressed image, uncompress it and run
from memory.
I have tried it on 2500 series routers and it works.
It has the nice adavantage that you can now upgrade the IOS on a 2500 without
going through the flash load helper and rebooting the box.
The problem is, that you need enough memory for the uncompressed IOS and the
amount of RAM to run the image. So don't expect to compress a 12Meg 12.0
Enterprise IOS and run it from RAM. But if you have 2500 with 16 MB DRAM and
just 4MB Flash you might squeeze a 6MB IOS on there and run it.
Good luck,
Arne
