Virtual Link authentication with MD5

I am having a problem with Virtual Link authentication with MD5.OSPF
connectivuty works untill i plug in MD5 authentication on the VLinks.
on R5 and R3 i have
area 3 virtual-link xx.xx.xx.xx message-digest-key 4 md5 test

       Area-0 Area-3
     R3-----R5-----R4 ( R4 has loopbacks which are in area 44)
             <virtual>
             < link >

On r5
router ospf 100
area 0 authentication message-digest is enabled.

Do i need have authentication in the trasnit area also and have r5 and r4's
ethernets have the ip ospf message digest keys ?
