Hi,
Quick introduction, my name is Lachlan Kidd and I'm sitting for my
CCIE in Sydney on the 1st-2nd November. I am a communications engineer for
Data#3 based in Melbourne.
I can answer two of the three observations posted here.
2) Yes, you are correct. As far as the clients in a route-reflector
scenario are concerned, it is a normal IBGP session, hence the sync rule
applies. By turning off sync the restriction that an IGP must know about a
route before it is published, is removed.
3) Private AS's are AS numbers above 65000 and are not controlled by any
governing body. They can be used internally (similar to private IP
addresses). As a consquence they must not be leaked to the internet. Hence
the keyword remove-private-as will remove any AS above 65000 from an AS
path. If you have access to Halabi's book on BGP (the bible!) check out
pages 273-274 and 333-335.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Lachlan

Please respond to

I'd really appreciate any comments anyone can offer on the following 3
observations.
1) Confederations.
It appears that when BGP routes are learnt about networks within a local
confederation, they get given a local preference of 100. Is there any
reason for this?
2) Route Reflectors.
Unless I've been doing something wrong, it looks like the reflector
'server'
will only reflect routes to the 'client(s)' if it has the route - not only
in the BGP table (sh ip bgp), but must have the route in the routing table
(sh ip ro) which implies that there must be BGP/IGP sync (or BGP/IGP sync
turned off). Is this correct?
3) BGP command not anywhere on the CD...
neighbor x.x.x.x remove-private-AS
This command has been in the IOS since 10.3 but no command references have
anything on it. Admittedly, I am studying from home and have no connection
to CCO. Has anyone used this command? What's the difference between
'private' ASs and 'public' ASs?
thanks in advance
