RE: Passing the test

I can imagine a world where there are more people passing the test than 20 a
week. I know the Novell and MS certs have become a joke. They are a joke
because people can pass the test without any real world experience.

There are many people who fail the test who are people that I would consider
to be at the CCIE level. The industry needs more people like this to be
identified by Cisco with a certification. They have tried to do this with
the CCNP. Without a lab exam I don't think that the CCNP exams will truly
fill this need.

In my opinion, Cisco is trying to control the numbers. As we all study
together and gather more knowledge Cisco will raise the bar. They have to
in order to keep the numbers down. There will always be a small percentage
of us passing this test. I don't mind that, I just hope that I get my turn
before my wife leaves me and my kids forget my name.

Someone once told me that if you pass the exam, it only means that you were
a CCIE before you walked into the lab. You just had to come in and put it
down on paper. I am a CCIE dammit!! I just can't seem to get it down on the
paper.

I'll let you all know how Lucky number 7 goes for me. I have no date yet.
I'm on the waiting list.

What do you think a certification should be? Obviously MS certs are becoming
a joke (no offense), the CCIE seems to be based on a curve where they only
allow so many to pass every quarter. If you were developing a new
certification program, what would be the most important aspects? How would
you keep the cert credible, yet fair.

Obviously the #1 purpose of these certs is to raise money for the company
through (1) growing the knowledge base of your product, so customers will
buy your product b/c it is easy to find employees to support it, and (2) by
selling books, courses and lab fees.

I know the CCIE process is frustrating (I took a step back and failed to
reach day two on my second attempt), but I think it is a great model for
other certifications. Your input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian
