HELLO to our CCIE-to-be folks,

I finally got my CCIE# 5918 right after Joe in San Jose on this memorable
memorial weekend. What a great way to spend a holiday like this, off course
after passing it!!
I wish I could have joined this study group earlier since I really learned a lo
t
from most of you and got inspired by those CCIE success story. I could not
believe it's my turn to do this!!

To make my story short, I got into the networking field back in 91' doing
Novell/UNIX integration. I worked for a Novell VAR and got my CNA then MCSE.
The next few years, I was doing product testing and support for bridge / router
manufactures where I gained a great deal of experience on internetworking.
Since becoming a network consultant at Lucent, I joined our internal study grou
p
and passed the written 2 years ago. Before the expiration of my written last
July, I went ahead and took my first lab --- Crash and Burn badly. I went back
again in Oct. and this past Jan. for my 2nd and 3rd attempts, I was feeling mor
e
disappointed after each failures. Before giving it up after my 3rd failure, I
got strong support and prayer from my wife and our church. I signed up for my
4th try again and changed the way I studied before. I did not stress myself al
l
the time trying to accomplish 20 things in a lab, instead, each week I focused
on specific area, did thorough research on the CDs and CCO, then set up my
practice lab.

On the warm memorial weekend, I was back again in San Jose for my 4th try. I
did not push myself too hard this time and calm down to slowly accomplish each
section. I was lucky to get the day 2 book and even got into the
troubleshooting section. After receiving my welcome letter from the proctor, I
called my wife with tears since I have owed her too many weekends burying mysel
f
into the labs. With our first baby due this month, I really thank God that He
really does everything in His time with His plan on me.

With that, good luck to everyone and enjoy the road to your final goal, it$B!G(
Bs
worth the try and never give up!!
My next certificate will be something called $B!H(BDADDY$B!I(B which many of yo
u are
certified!!!

Cheers..............

Subject: New CCIE

H e l l o from Sunny San Jose.

I've just arrived back in my hotel after sucessfully completing the CCIE R/S
lab.

My brain isn't quite functioning correctly yet, but I wanted to pass along a
great deal of thanks to everyone in the group. I have learned so much from
each of you. I'll try to continue to lurk and help when I can.

Here's a bit of my story:

I'm 33. Got my first computer when I was 13. 20 years. Wow!!! Fell in
love with programming. At 17, I got a job teaching college and was building
custom IBM compatibles for a friends business. I taught continuing
education computer classes. Did that for three years to help pay for my own
college. By my third year of college I burned out on programming. I'd
finally come out of my shell and found that I didn't want to sit in a cube
all day and write code. I then went to work for a small telcom interconnect
and learned all about PBXs. Did that for 7 years. I decided to make the
leap back into "real" computers and data. I went to work for the phone
company as a field data technician. Did that for 1 1/2 years and then
became a Sales Engineer. Been doing that for about 3 years now. I've got
lots of hands on and plenty of different certifications(Cisco, Bay/Nortel,
Fore/Marconi, etc...). Last year, I decided to work towards my CCIE. I
also decided to get all the intermediate certifications along the way.
Starting from last April to November, I did my CCNA, CCDA, CCNP, CCDP. In
January of this year I did my Voice access specialization. In February I
passed the CCIE written. I've been hitting my engineering lab at work ever
since. I did 4 hours a nite every day of the week and 12 hours each day of
the weekend since then. Its been 3 1/2 months of hell. My wife has been
very understanding.

Boy, was that a long rambling paragraph. Hope my highschool english teacher
isn't reading this!

Thanks again,
    Joe Martin
CCIE#5917, and a couple of other things...
