RE: NetBIOS Dlsw

NetBEUI is a "non-routable" protocol, whereas TCP/IP is a "routable"
protocol.

The whole reason for DLSW is to scale this non-routable protocol across a
WAN. The same goes for SNA

If you have TCP/IP available to you, just route it!

If the NetBIOS information is run over TCP/IP at the server/workstation, the
router will only see TCP/IP... never a NetBIOS name.

If the NetBIOS information is run over NetBEUI, the router will see the
NetBIOS name...
cache in the reachability table...
announce it to the DLSW peers for their reachability table...
the other routers will see a workstation looking for a particular name...
look in the name in the reachability table...
send out canureach messages if it can't find it...

Once it all talks and you want a challenge... vary your hosts between
multiple rings and bridge groups. Filter by MAC, filter by NetBIOS name,
change the filters, test the NT/98/95 reachability each time. Configure
ring-groups and make sure that they're separate.

First of all, on all the Microsoft PCs, turn off MS NetBUIE, and leave only
TCPIP protocol with Client for MS networks service under Network property.
Once
it's been set, and make sure no filters is turned on against NetBIOS, such
as
"dlsw icannotreach sap F0".

When the DLSW peers are connected, you should see the your PC's netbios
names
shown up under "show dlsw reach" database either in the Ethernet or TR side,
and
you may browse the PCs of the other side under "network neighborhood".
Remember, NetBIOS is encapsulated in TCPIP during DLSW exchange process
(just
like SNA sessions under "show dlsw circuit"). NetBUIE is a non-routed
protocol
and will be bridged across if you have NetBUIE protocol in your PCs.

Ok,

I'm tying to test dlsw source-route transparent over ip cloud to ethernet
transparent.

What exactly has to be done on the microsoft side?? Will I see the NetBIOS
names
int the reachability cache??

I have two laptops on both ends. one on token ring the other on ethernet..

any help is appreciated.

thanks,
Erik
